I’ve been on voluntary leave for over 2 weeks now to help my company get through the Covid-19 epidemic and I miss flying so much already. Since I’m no longer considered an essential employee I’m on quarantine with everyone else, no more flight attendant life for me for the next 2-3 months! It’s been nice to catch up on my writing and reading, cook more and spend time with the boyfriend and the cat. However I’m already missing everything about my usual lifestyle. Being grounded as a flight attendant isn’t easy and I still got 6 more weeks to go. Let’s just say I’m running out of things to clean and if the weather doesn’t get nicer soon I might lose my sanity.

Here’s the list of things I miss most…

I miss jumpseat therapy.

Waking up & not knowing what city I’m in.

Having a bed to eat in & a bed to sleep in, nobody likes a crumby bed.

Pouring diet cokes while I ask passengers random questions about their life.

I miss lipstick.

Being able to smile at people. I miss going out in public without wearing a mask that constantly fogs up my glasses and makes it harder to breathe.

Showing up for work and having to tell everyone my life story since I’ve never met these people in my life and am about to spend the next 2-3 days with them.

I miss telling people to put their seatbelt on over and over again.

I even miss asking pilots how they like their coffee and making it for them.

Telling people “goodbye, thank you” and getting no response back. Okay not really but I do miss meeting new people every day.

I miss repeating 4 snack options over and over again since nobody takes their headphones out.

And I miss going grocery shopping in other countries.

Having to run through the plane because someone ordered a tea and I don’t have any hot water on the cart.

Most of all I miss spending my layovers wandering through the aisles of small bookstores, getting iced lattes from local coffeeshops, and hanging out at craft breweries.

There are way too many things I miss about being a flight attendant while I’m grounded aka stuck in quarantine. The list could go on and on but I’ll sign off here, I think you get the point.

Missing the sky,

-The Hoppy Flight Attendant
