I'm writing this in 2020 - sorry I know that probably just triggered a few of you. However, with the recent #blacklivesmatter movement I've realized that I need and want to be vocal about issues that I feel strongly about &make activism a bigger part of my life.
I'm a feminist. I'm a supporter of the LGBTQ community. I strongly believe black lives matter.I've struggled with how to voice those opinions and how to have helpful conversations about them. The only way to fix that is to start. I will make mistakes because I'm not perfect but I'm excited to have a space to put these thoughts and actions down. If we don't speak up and take action then nothing is going to change, no matter what it is you want to see change. Hopefully I can inspire others to integrate activism into their lives as well. We are all on our own journey but this is mine. Some things that I'm currently doing:
- Became a member of NOW (National Org. For Women) and plan to be involved in their organization by volunteering and participating in events to help not only women but for social change for everyone.
- Reading & discussing with a group of friends: "Me & White Supremacy" by Layla Saad - 28-Day Challenge to Combat Racism, Change the World, and Become a Good Ancestor
- Supporting small businesses, especially black and/or female owned companies.
I will never fully understand the black struggle in this country and I can’t even begin to relate however I want it known to everyone that I am an ally. I will do whatever I can to support you. Black lives matter and I will not stand for the murder of both George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. Unfortunately I have witnessed racism right in front of me, especially living in the south I saw it everywhere.
